The Many Uses For A Silicone Baking Mat

There are several advantages in using a silicone baking mat over traditional types of protective materials such as parchment paper. They are easy to use and store, and they can be used for years with just a simple wipe down with warm, soapy water and a rinse after use. They are also non-stick, so making candy or working with fondant is easy using these handy tools in the kitchen.

These mats can take the extremely high heat, which is why they are ideal for making cookies, pastries or other types of baked food items. They can be round, rectangular or square and come in sizes to fit in toaster ovens or traditional ovens. Typically, a silicone baking mat is sold as either a full sheet, which is 16 by 24 inches or a half sheet, which is 12 inches by 16 inches. Most of the rectangular mats or the fondant mats have a ruler edge, allowing for easy planning when working with the mat.

Creating Design Elements

One of the benefits of using a silicone mat is the ability to place the mat in the freezer to create a hard, cold sheet. Then, drizzling chocolate or icing on the mat in a free-flowing or patterned design allows for easy shaping. Once the design element is finished, the mat can be returned to the fridge to quickly harden the chocolate or icing.

When cooled, even fine design elements can be easily peeled from the mat. The mat is also flexible, so it can be bent and folded to prevent any breakage during the process.
